How long do you have to replace a cracked windshield caused by flying debris and rocks? Can you get ticketed?

A vehicle on the interstate threw a rock and it hit the corner of my front windshield on the passenger side of the car, under the windshield wiper, so the impact went unnoticed until a crack appeared over the windshield wiper. The crack is now to big to fill and the cost of a new windshield is less than my deductable, but still over $300.00. I am planning on replacing my windshield when I have the money, but do not want to risk getting a ticket. Are there any laws governing cracked windshields?

I have been wondering the same thing and in process of finding out more. I have read in California code that it is unlawful to operate the vehicle if the windshield is obstructing the drivers view. Unfortunatley you can be pulled over for no reason at all if you live within 100 miles of the USA border.

in most cases it is unlawful to operate the vehicle with a cracked windshield especially if it obstructs your view..in the past this was a fix it ticket and no charge if you showed proof of correction lately with the economy they ( police) are trying to get money for everything.
