Do both parties on a title need to be present when trading or selling the vehicle?

I am joint owner of a vehicle ex-boyfriend. He moved out of town over a year and a half ago. I kept the vehicle since I was the one making payments on it. Now the vehicle is paid off and I want to sell or trade it in. I don't have any way of locating him to sign the title. Can I sell or trade the vehicle without his signature.

If it is a jointly owned car, you may both have to appear with the buyer to sign the documents over for the car. I know that both myself and the seller of my last car has to both appear before a notary public to sign the papers. If you manage to sell the car without him present, you may run into trouble later on if he decides to come back into your life and sue you for selling property that was legally his, no matter how many car payments you have made. To make your life easier, I would suggest talking to an attorney before selling the car. Make sure you know where you stand legally and keep proof of all payments made by you should anything come back around to hit you later on. Good luck
