Sellers need to do three things:--Sign over the title, for vehicles 1986 or newer, to the new owner. --Have a bill of sale ready to complete; if you don't have the title or registration, this bill of sale is a required document. Make a copy for yourself to serve as a receipt.--After you sell the vehicle, remove the license plates. The buyer must apply for a new tag; the old tag stays with the seller. Notice of Transfer and Release of LiabilityYou must unregister your tag or license after the sale. To do so, visit your local Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office. You'll be asked to provide proper identification and complete a form.
