Delinquent CT motor vehicle taxes from 1996
I received a notice from Taxserv Capital Services DM-CT, LLC that I have delinquent motor vehicle tax due to the City of Danbury. The taxes are from 1996, the year I moved to CA. The amount comes to almost $1000, what with all of the penalties assessed. Not sure why it took 13 years for them to find me. And the proof they require to dispute the tax, if I ever had it, is long gone. Questions: can I dispute this? Isn't there a statute of limitations? What if I could show proof from my insurance company and CA DMV that the vehicles were registered in CA in addition to proof that I became a resident of CA? Is it worth fighting this? Although I know I don't owe this money I also don't want a long-drawn out haggle where this ends up getting reported to credit agencies -- even if I'm right and they're wrong.

Im exactly in the same situation. Moved out of CT in 2004 and couple days ago i received amount due of 950.44 inc principle, interest, collection fee, etc.
Sad thing is, I registered my car in VA on 10/05/04 even though I moved out of CT in Aug/Sept. The assessment would be made on Oct 1st. Called Bridgeport Tax Collector today and was asked to show proof of Residence before Oct 1st. I lived in VA as a paying guest and wouldnt have the common residence proof docs. I have my insurance dated from 9/02/04 (not sure if they accept this).

Researched and created an account online for Bridgeport Personal property Taxes - https://bridgeport.pfoil.com/pub/login/?ReturnUrl=%2fapp%2fhome%2fmypayments.as
px

Was able to locate my personal property by the VIN # and saw the bill. Looks like they were charging for 2 full years till the validity of the registration.

Since ur case is older than myne, what actions did you take at this time?

Appreciate your inputs.

I have been duped by the Taxserv Capital Services who claim that I
owe the city of Danbury personal property tax. I do not, but they now want "proof" of some 5 years ago. They claim there's n
o statute of limitations. They are nuts.

QCT,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation.. I got my 960odd dollars zeroed
out; Called City of Bridgeport with the Plate# and they said that i
have to show proff of residence where car has been moved to,
registration in new state, and CT plate return receipt. Since i was
living as a paying guest in VA, I didn't have any residence proof, but
was able to show my Tax returns. City of Bridgeport also said that its
my responsibility to inform them of the new address once moved out.
USPS mail forwarding did ni

If i recall right, CT law says that taxes are collectible for 15yrs.
Also read somewhere that if the bill is over 100 dol, city would pass
the bill to Debt collectors. I'm thinking that debt collectors deliberately delay so they can make a ton of money in the form of charges/interest.

Checked online and found couple websites for city of Hartford http://www.hartford.gov/tax/FAQ07.htm

See if you can find an old bill under your name/address/vin#

I’m in the same situation; I moved to AZ and although AZ says they sent CT confirmation that the vehicles were now registered in a different state, CT’s hired tax collector is requiring that I send them proof.

I'm not sure if this changes the statute of limitations but it appears that the City of Danbury has sold off their delinquent property taxes to a third party( July ‘09. See link…

I can’t say for sure if different rules apply to this third party lien holder but collection efforts have recently become more aggressive for me.
